Benkulu

Breakfast served on the veranda. We got a full pot of hot milk (we ordered coffee with milk) and 4 pieces of “chocolate surprise”—grilled toast with chocolate sprinkles in the middle. We finally got our coffee—“crankcase coffee”- very, very strong. Then it was off for an exciting day- a visit to Soekarno’s house when he was under house arrest and to Ft Marlborough. We covered the highlights in about an hour and we had the rest of the day to figure out what to do.

After wandering the “city” streets for awhile, we stopped at the local hardware store to try to buy some plastic tubing to convert the mandi into a shower. $ .43 later and we were in business. A little first aid tape and John converted the mandi to “Handy Mandi”—and we had a shower (although, it was still only cold water).
"The Handy Mandi"

We found an A/C restaurant/hotel. Once again, we were alone and had a quick lunch. Back at our hotel, we had a few beers and watched the surf crash on the shore. It doesn’t get more exciting than this! Dinner- more nasi goreym- and it was off to bed.
