Anuradhapura to Columbo

AM in Anuradhapura. We found a great guide, thanks to Punchi, and saw the entire site in about 4 hours. For over 1,000 years this city was the capital of the Sinhalese kingdom, starting in 380 BC. It was finally replaced by Polonnaruwa in an attempt to reduce the danger from invasions from India.

At one of the rest areas, we met a woman doing tatting. She learned from her grandmother, who got the skill from the Dutch. She made potholders out of the seeds of a local tree- the ipil (we bought the two she had….one for us, one for Mom).

Lots of cows wandering on the road- Punchi explained that they live on the road and go back to their homes at regular times to milk- then go back on the road.

Punchi talked about his 3 years in the Sri Lankan navy on a destroyer with no guns….
Note-
* There are clock towers in every town- with clocks that may or not work.
* There are 4 types of road dogs:
Type A: Caramel Color
Type B: White
Type C: Ebony
Then the mixes- Type AB: Jack Russell terrier type- with caramel and white, etc.
Back on the road and we were back in Colombo in a few hours. Colombo traffic was crazed, even at 6:00. We checked into the Galle Face Hotel, an old British colonial hotel and got a wonderful room with an ocean view.

We watched the sunset and headed to our favorite spot- the Cricket Club
