We got up early, managed to connect to email and we got an American breakfast in the 42nd floor restaurant. The leg from Vancouver to Seoul was grueling- 11 hours in a packed Airbus. The 6 hours from Seoul to Singapore went a little better - with a few hours of sleep for both of us. We saw just about every movie offering- from Elizabeth, to Rounders to Holy Man plus a doggie travel advisory with a Sushi look-alike in the lead role. “Tweak” was in the seat in front of us…an X’er with spiked orange hair and a head twitch. At least he provided us with some amusement during the flight.
We landed at 1:00 am in Singapore and managed to find our way to the SIA transit area…where we headed off in buses to our respective hotels. We were in a great, centrally located hotel- at 2:00 am, anything looks good. Another collapse into bed. John woke up about 7:00, I stayed in bed until 9:00. We got a rip-off hotel sandwich (ham and cheese with no cheese and 5 diet cokes for $41 (welcome to Singapore).
To get a sense of the city, we hired a cab for an hour and got a short tour of Little India and Arab Street. The cab driver recommended Mutha Curry for lunch and we dined on “fish head curry” on banana leaf…. spectacular. From there, we took a cab to Boat Quay and had a few beers by the river. This is truly the land of laws- “No Durians allowed in the hotel”, “Death for Drug Traffickers under Singapore law”, no spitting, no urinating, no feeding the birds…
The airport was heavenly- PC hookups and free Internet connections.
